Azure Arc - enabled data services in disconnected mode

Last time I had the chance to talk with Travis Wright (Principal Group Engineering Manager at Microsoft) about getting an overview of the end-to-end experience for deploying Azure Arc—enabled data services in connected mode, but what about scenarios where you are disconnected? In this video, you will learn how to understand your hybrid environment and set up the right solution for success. There are multiple options for the degree of connectivity from your Azure Arc-enabled data services environment to Azure. This video covers use cases for Azure Arc—enabled data services in disconnected mode.

There are multiple options for the degree of connectivity from your Azure Arc-enabled data services environment to Azure. As your requirements vary based on business policy, government regulation, or the availability of network connectivity to Azure, you can choose from the following connectivity modes.

Azure Arc-enabled data services provides you the option to connect to Azure in two different connectivity modes:

  • Directly connected
  • Indirectly connected

The connectivity mode provides you the flexibility to choose how much data is sent to Azure and how users interact with the Arc Data Controller. Depending on the connectivity mode that is chosen, some functionality of Azure Arc-enabled data services may or may not be available.

Azure Arc makes it possible to run Azure data services on-premises, at the edge, and in public clouds using Kubernetes and the infrastructure of your choice. Currently, the following Azure Arc-enabled data services are available:

  • SQL Managed Instance
  • PostgreSQL Hyperscale (preview)

You can learn more about Azure Arc-enabled data services on Microsoft Docs.

Azure Arc-enabled SQL Managed Instance has near 100% compatibility with the latest SQL Server database engine, and enables existing SQL Server customers to lift and shift their applications to Azure Arc data services with minimal application and database changes while maintaining data sovereignty. At the same time, SQL Managed Instance includes built-in management capabilities that drastically reduce management overhead.
