Deprecation of Mail flow features in classic Exchange admin center in WW service

In September, we announced that we will be deprecating the classic Exchange admin center (EAC). Today, we are sharing details about the next phase of deprecation. Mail flow features hosted in the classic EAC will be retired in December 2021. Between now and December, if an admin clicks on any mail flow feature links in the classic EAC, a banner for these features will be displayed to make it easier to locate the new home for these features. The modern EAC offers an updated and modern UI experience for managing your mail flow.

Navigating to Mail Flow Pages

In the modern EAC, under the Mail flow tab, you will find pages for Message trace, Rules, Remote domains, Accepted domains, Connectors, Alerts, and Alert policies. This is organized similar to the classic EAC, where these items were found at the top of the page.

Mail flow reports can be found under the Reports section beneath Mail flow, and Mail flow insights can be found below Insights.

Message Trace

Message Trace in the modern EAC has also been updated with the modern design.

Running a Message Trace

Start a trace by selecting + Start a Trace. The panel, as shown below, will fly out. You can run a message trace just like you would in the classic EAC.

For more search options, you can select a custom time range by selecting Custom time range. For additional options such as Message ID and delivery status, you can select Detailed search options as shown below. See Message trace in the modern EAC in Exchange Online for more information on message trace in the modern EAC.

In the modern EAC message trace:

  • You can request one of three different report types when you start a trace.
    • A summary report is available in near real-time, viewable immediately after you select Search. It provides message summary information, including date, sender, recipient, subject, and status. You can filter and export the results and get additional details about each message returned (such as diagnostic information, message events, related records, and more).
    • An enhanced summary report is available as a downloadable CSV file. It includes the same information as the summary report, along with additional details such as direction, original client IP address, and more.
    • An extended report is available as a downloadable CSV file. It includes the same information as the summary and enhanced summary reports, along with comprehensive routing and message event details. Learn more about extended message trace reports.
  • You can save custom queries for searches that are unique to your environment.
  • Default queries are provided for you based on what we have seen admins use the most.
  • Autosaved queries saves the last 10 queries that were run but are not saved manually.
  • Track your pending downloadable reports under the downloadable reports tab. It will show you the availability status of the report.
