We are announcing General Availability for the Azure SQL Migration extension for Azure Data Studio. The Azure SQL Migration extension for Azure Data Studio provides an easy wizard-based migration experience to simplify your SQL Server database migrations to Azure. You can assess your SQL Server databases for migration readiness, get right-sized Azure recommendations to meet your databases' performance requirements and migrate them to Azure SQL Managed Instance or SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines with minimal downtime.
The migration experience is powered by the Azure Database Migration Service that is scalable, resilient, secure and flexible to meet the needs of your organization. The service is now designed to work with the Azure SQL Migration extension to simplify your migration journey by allowing you to use your own compute with self-hosted integration runtime to natively connect to your source database backup locations on-premises and migrate them to Azure.
Since the Preview announcement of the Azure SQL Migration extension in September 2021, we added multiple capabilities and features to enhance your overall SQL Server migration experience. Some of the notable features are:
1. Run Azure Data Studio on a Linux machine to both assess and get Azure recommendations for your SQL Server databases running on a Linux server. See the blog post Migrate SQL Server on Linux using the Azure SQL Migration extension for Azure Data Studio where the steps to migrate your SQL Server databases running on Linux are highlighted.
2. Enhanced user experience in the Azure SQL Migration extension to save the state of the migration wizard and resume from the saved state at a later point in time and to retry failed migrations if you encountered transient issues in the source or target migration environments. These features were highlighted in detail in the November 2021 release blog post.
3. Integration with the Azure portal to view and monitor the details of your database migrations. This meant that you could start your database migrations using the Azure SQL Migration extension in Azure Data Studio and view or track their progress in the Azure portal. In addition, you can also perform operations related to your database migrations in the Azure portal (for example, migration cutover, retry failed migration, monitor the health of the self-hosted integration runtime). See the December 2021 release blog post for details.
4. A popular feature in the extension that provides right-sized Azure recommendations for your SQL Server databases. This feature collects performance data from your source SQL Server databases and provides Azure recommendations (for Azure SQL Managed Instance or SQL Server on Azure Virtual Machines) to meet your databases' performance requirements with the lowest price point. See the February 2022 release blog post for details about this feature.
5. The capabilities of the Azure SQL Migration extension for Azure Data Studio and the Azure Database Migration Service can be extended to run multiple database migrations across multiple SQL Server instance at scale using automation with Azure PowerShell and Azure CLI. See the blog post Migrate SQL Server databases at scale to Azure using PowerShell / CLI for more details on this.
We conducted multiple scalability and performance tests to highlight the time duration and performance statistics for migrations with various database backup sizes and multiple self-hosted integration runtime nodes. See the details shared in the technical blog post Database Migration Service at scale for more details.
With this GA announcement, we are also expanding the service to multiple regions globally to support your database migrations wherever they are. You can check the regional availability for the service here.
