Azure SQL News Update: May 2022

Today Data Exposed goes live at 12PM PT on LearnTV. Every 4 weeks, we’ll do a News Update. We’ll include product updates, videos, blogs, etc. as well as upcoming events and things to look out for. If you missed the episode, you can find them all at https://aka.ms/AzureSQLYT. This month was a special #maythe4th episode that I think you’ll enjoy.

You can read this blog to get all the updates and references mentioned in the show. Here’s the May 2022 update:

Product updates

Let’s start with Azure SQL Database. Data storage limits have increased from 1.5 TB to 2 TB for single databases and elastic pools configured with 8 and 10 vCores. This increase applies to both serverless and provisioned compute and both General Purpose and Business Critical service tiers. Change data capture (CDC) also became generally available, and this allows you to record activity on a database whenever tables and rows have been modified. For more information, see the docs (plus embedded Data Exposed episode!). Emily Lisa came on the show to tell us about some zone redundancy updates, including the GA of zone redundancy for the general purpose tier in Azure SQL Database.

On the public preview side for Azure SQL Database, migrations from Hyperscale to General Purpose was announced, which is exciting. It makes it so Hyperscale is no longer a one-way street! There are some limitations in the preview, please see the details. Some other preview updates include the ability to create and utilize AAD server principals in the master of a SQL Database, backup history for SQL DB available in a DMV (sys.dm_database_backups), and, last but not least, Hyperscale now supports point-in-time-restore for up to 35 days, bringing additional parity with General Purpose and Business Critical.

Another big GA announcement was on the migration front – the Azure SQL Migration extension for Azure Data Studio. This makes it easy and self-explanatory to migrate your databases to Azure SQL. You can even do it at scale, with PowerShell and Azure CLI modules.

Other database updates

Starting in 2022 we’re trying to keep you updated on what’s going on with other database services at Microsoft, as we understand that oftentimes you’re using more than one service. Here are the updates I gathered from April 2022.

Azure Cosmos DB

Other database updates

General availability: Azure Synapse Link now supports existing Azure Cosmos DB containers

General availability: Azure Cosmos DB portal—Azure Synapse Link seamless Power BI

General availability: Unique partial indexes in Azure Cosmos DB API for MongoDB

General availability: Azure Cosmos DB autoscale RU/s entry point is 4x lower

Public preview: Azure Cosmos DB API for MongoDB unique index re-indexing

Generally available: Azure Database for PostgreSQL – Hyperscale (Citus) now includes PgBouncer 1.17

Generally available: Azure Database for MySQL – Flexible Server higher burstable compute

In addition to these updates, we had so many folks on (in theme and costume!) the show. I can’t do it justice by writing about it, you’ll need to go watch on https://aka.ms/AzureSQLYT.
