AKS on Azure Stack HCI - August 2021 update

Hi All,

I am happy to announce that the AKS on Azure Stack HCI August update is now available!  You can evaluate AKS-HCI by registering here: https://aka.ms/AKS-HCI-Evaluate.

With this update - we are bringing in the following changes:

Expanded Node Pool Capabilities

Prior to the August update we have allowed you to create Kubernetes clusters with up to two node pools.  One for Linux worker nodes, and one for Windows worker nodes.  With the August update we now allow you to create Kubernetes clusters with more than two node pools.  This allows you to provision worker nodes of different sizes in the same cluster, to accommodate the needs of any applications that you want to run.

ContainerD is now the default Container Runtime for our Linux Worker Nodes

While this should change be completely transparent to our users - with the August update we are moving our Linux Worker nodes from using the Docker Container runtime to using ContainerD.  This is a change that we made earlier in the year with AKS - and is in response to the decision by Kubernetes to deprecate the use of Docker.  You can learn more about this here: Don't Panic: Kubernetes and Docker | Kubernetes.

Improved Error handling for installation

We have been keeping a close eye on our telemetry - and we have seen that a number of folk have been hitting issues installing AKS on Azure Stack HCI.  That is no good!  So we have been making a raft of investments - from fixing bugs that people have uncovered during installation, to improving our error messages, to making sure that if a problem was encountered during installation - we fail quickly so that you can figure out how to correct it.

Once you have downloaded and installed the AKS on Azure Stack HCI August 2021 Update – you can report any issues you encounter, and track future feature work on our GitHub Project at https://github.com/Azure/aks-hci. And, if you do not have the hardware handy to evaluate AKS on Azure Stack HCI you can follow our guide for evaluating AKS-HCI inside an Azure VM: https://aka.ms/aks-hci-evalonazure.

I look forward to hearing from you all!

Cheers,
Ben
